Taking food into Bali from Australia

By Michael Gebicki

WHAT RESTRICTIONS ARE THERE FOR TAKING A COOKED FRUIT CAKE AND ICING/DECORATING INGREDIENTS TO BALI FOR OUR DAUGHTER'S WEDDING NEXT YEAR?

G. BUTTEL, SHELLHARBOUR.

You should have no problem getting your cake and the other ingredients into Bali. Australians regularly bring in Vegemite, and Japanese visitors often import mirin, wasabe, furikake, dashi, miso and Japanese soy sauce, just some of the essential items that are hard to find in Bali. You'll probably want to carry the cake in your checked luggage rather than as cabin luggage. Leave it in the baking tin, wrap it in bubble wrap, cushion it with soft clothing all around and it should arrive intact. My mother-in-law once transported a wedding cake to England in her suitcase. It arrived safely, and my own goose was cooked.
