The Location Lane Cove National Park, about a half-hour drive from central Sydney, offers a welcome green break without leaving the city. The park's central feature is the meandering Lane Cove River, which provides perfect paddling by kayak or canoe. There are also easy walks and a range of picnic options.

The Place Tandara is Sydney's only "glamping" (glamorous camping) option, offering a spacious and audacious African safari-style tent with a huge double bed and deluxe bathroom fitted out with all mod cons. It's effectively a hotel room with a flap which opens onto a raised deck, a space-age barbecue, a manicured garden complete with speakers to pipe out your iPod music, and a view of your own private patch of Lane Cove National Park.

The Experience Tandara means "here we camp" but you can forget the childhood experience of squatting in a soggy tent with your folks. This is a private and romantic bush retreat sectioned off from the rest of the caravan park by a rustic wooden fence and - whether you sit and sip from the complimentary mini-bar looking over Lane Cove Valley, fire up the grill for an outdoor feast or cosy up inside on your king-sized bed in front of the plasma TV - it's ideal for the tent-phobic. You can stroll from the park down to the lazy Lane Cove River, or make use of the two mountain bikes in Tandara, but the point is really to revel in your tented haven. At night, indulge in some star-gazing, with a touch of possum-shooing on the side.

Don't Miss Make the most of the national park. Pick up the Riverside Walk for a tranquil waterside wander or head to the boat shed and hire a paddle-boat or canoe for a romantic row. The adventurous can take the free mountain bikes along the three-kilometre Pennant Hills-West Pymble fire trail.
