Jetstar flight attendant sacked for contacting 15yo on Facebook

By Chris Barrett

A Jetstar flight attendant accused of contacting a 15-year-old female passenger on Facebook without her consent is believed to have been sacked by the budget airline.

The male cabin crew member wasa fortnight ago pending an internal investigation.

The girl's mother claimed he had accessed the 15-year-old's contact details on the passenger manifest of a flight between the Sunshine Coast and Melbourne and then repeatedly asked for her mobile phone number and address via Facebook.

Jetstar senior management wound up their two-week investigation into the complaint yesterday and it is understood that the staff member under the microscope has been sacked.

The airline's head of corporate relations Simon Westaway would only say that Jetstar had "taken very appropriate action".

"Jetstar has taken appropriate action in relation to this issue and the outcome remains private between the individual and the airline," he said.

"Jetstar has kept a line of communication with the family of the passenger through senior management over the period to the conclusion of its internal investigation.

"It is inappropriate for the airline to provide further details of the findings."

He said the matter was now considered closed.

The mother, who has previously asked only to be referred to as Elizabeth, said the crew member first spoke to her daughters, aged 15 and 16, outside the plane's toilets during the flight in September.

She said her daughters did not tell the man their names but, within hours of landing, the flight attendant had added the 15-year-old to his Facebook page and requested she become his friend.

He continued to pursue her and her older sister despite them ignoring his request.

"I've never wanted to add a 16-year-old before... um, well you seem quite mature maybe we might come [sic] friends. Here is my number....do you even have a phone? What area do you live in?" the attendant wrote in one of several posts.

"Why haven't you added me?"

The mother said the man was unable to contact her older daughter because she withheld her surname on her Facebook page.
