MY WIFE TURNS 50 NEXT JUNE AND WISHES TO SEE AN ACTIVE VOLCANO. TRAVELLING WITH THE CHILDREN AND THEIR PARTNERS, LOOKING FOR SOME VARIETY BESIDES THE VOLCANO. K. HOURIGAN, BALLINA, NSW

There are plenty of active volcanoes in Indonesia, more than anywhere else in fact. Mount Bromo is the most popular but it gets a huge crowd at dawn, which is when you need to be there. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, on the Big Island, is another spot with a spectacularly eruptive volcano and it's dependable. Tanna in Vanuatu is about the closest to our shores and you can drive straight up to the lip of the cone. Italy also has some incredible volcanic wonders. Etna on Sicily is a towering giant and for something really extraordinary, the island of Stromboli in the Aeolian Islands off Sicily delivers the goods. Either Hawaii or Italy would be my choice, both delivering the best combination of volcanic activity plus a multitude of other things to do and heaps of accommodation alternatives.
