THE WINNER

Trying to find an outstanding image from 2000 submissions is never easy, but the sixth Big Picture competition, in association with Fairfax Media's Clique Photographers Association, finally has a winner.

The Age photo editor Leigh Henningham, Traveller.com.au editorial producer Kylie McLaughlin, Sydney Morning Herald photo editor Mags King and Clique Photo Club community manager Louisa Kirby spent a day poring over the submissions.

The judges agreed that the winning image captured the three key ingredients to a travel image – good timing, a great backdrop and a little bit of luck.

As one judge commented: "Beautiful scenery is always part of our travel photography plans, but throw in a beautiful animal in the light with a rainbow and this picture is almost mystical. A great moment captured by the photographer of the landscape, the elements, and the horse … If only it was a unicorn …"

Thanks to all of our readers for the hundreds of entries and congratulations to Chris Cousins, who will travel on a luxury, eight-day APT Spirit of India river cruise with a partner or friend in a twin Signature suite, courtesy of APT valued at up to $14,390.

The prize includes economy return airfares to Kolkata from the winner's nearest Australian capital city, valued at up to $1500 a person. Trip highlights include a city tour of Kolkata, exploring its colonial heritage, including the bustling Dalhousie Square and St John's Church.

The cruise along the lower Ganges includes stops at Kalna, known as the City of Temples, and a guided cycle-rickshaw tour, an excursion to the brass-working village of Matiari and a visit to the former French colony of Chandannagar.
