The fairytale spa retreat in a castle: Castello del Nero

Uber-hotelier Christina Ong has unveiled her first property in continental Europe. Best-known for her Como spa retreats scattered across Asia, Ong's new Italian venture is something decidedly different. Castello del Nero is a converted Tuscan castle with 1000 years of history and sleek new interiors courtesy of Milanese designer Paola Navone.

While heritage fans will swoon over the beautifully preserved upper-storey bedrooms with their glorious 18th-century frescoes, elsewhere Navone has introduced contemporary furnishings in cool blues and greys which throw into sharp relief the ancient stone walls and floors.

As with any Como property, the spa is a highlight (this one measures 1000 square metres and has 10 treatment rooms) but the 300-hectare estate also beckons guests, with a series of walking trails winding past olive orchards and grapevines. The estate's produce, including honey and olive oil, is showcased in both of the hotel's restaurants. For a casual meal, Taverna's roast chicken with rosemary is hard to beat, but the signature dining experience is the Michelin-starred La Torre, where chef Giovanni Luca Di Pirro's sure touch can be seen in everything from the custom-designed crockery to immaculately executed dishes such as roast onion served with pecorino and cabbage crumb.

Perhaps the best thing about Castello del Nero is its location. Perched almost halfway between Florence and Siena, the resort offers regular shuttle services to both cities, allowing you to explore two of Tuscany's most appealing towns during your stay.
