Sheraton Fiji Resort sits alongside Sheraton Denarau Villas and the Westin Denarau Island Resort and Spa, all part of the Starwood Hotels and Resorts complex fringing Nadi Bay. Located on Fiji's main Island of Viti Levu (about 20 minutes from Nadi International Airport), the manmade Denarau Island is the South Pacific's largest integrated resort. All up there are nine resorts, a marina, shops, restaurants, beaches (mostly volcanic sand) and an 18-hole championship golf course. The Bula bus ($FJ8 a person a day) shuttles guests between resorts and the marina.

THE SPACE

The 30-year old resort, one of the first to open on Denarau Island, is set in lush, manicured gardens, with an enormous open-air lobby. Beyond are three interconnected pools, with the signature Flying Fish restaurant to the right and the LaiLai Kids Club to the left. An adults-only pool is tucked behind Flying Fish. Low-rise peach coloured buildings fan out from the main complex and house 297 rooms and suites. Bougainvillea tumbles down from balconies, giving the resort a Sante Fa feel. However swaying palms, Pacific music and rows of tiki torches let you know you're in Fiji.

THE ROOM

Our ocean studio room has a small balcony and expansive windows offering gorgeous views over lush lawn to Nadi Bay. The spacious room is decorated in warm hues with a contemporary floral feature wall. There's a king size bed (or two double beds) with white linen and bright floral bed runner. The bathroom has a freestanding bath tub as well as dual rain forest shower and dual vanity. There's also a desk and large flat screen TV. Two complimentary bottles of Fiji Water are supplied daily, but no mini bar.

THE FOOD

There are multiple eateries across all three Starwood properties, but the Pacific outpost of celebrity chef Peter Kuruvita's famed Pyrmont restaurant is my pick. In good weather book a table on the beach where, with your feet in the sand, you can tuck into local fish curry with tamarind chutney. Bliss. The kids fish and chips is one of the freshest and best I've seen (my daughter loves it). Seared yellow fin tuna with sweet crackling pork and ruby grapefruit is the restaurant's signature dish, or try the lightly seasoned school prawns tickled with salt, pepper and paprika. In inclement weather, book an inside table. Twice a week fire dancers perform in front of the restaurant (a different fire dance troupe performs at the Westin). The buffet restaurant Feast offers a good breakfast selection; Port O Call is the resort's nautical themed fine diner where gueridon service is delivered with a flourish, and the best coffee can be found at The Pantry.

STEPPING OUT

Once you've exhausted all the resort has to offer (pool volleyball, kava tasting or fish feeding for starters), you can play a round of golf or take the kids to the Big Bula Water Park (walking distance from the resort). MyFiji offers two new experiences from Denarau Marina: "MyFiji Island", a sailing cruise to the Mamanuca Islands, with butler service, sunset beach barbecue, water sports, and more. "MyFiji Cloud9" at Ro Ro Reef is an afternoon and sunset Cloud9 experience for MyFiji guests.

THE VERDICT

If you want an easy flop-and-drop holiday, with excellent restaurants, tropical cocktails, spas, kids club and more on tap, the Sheraton Fiji has your name on it.

HIGHLIGHTS

Blazing sunsets, fire dancers and any meal at Flying Fish Fiji.

LOWLIGHTS

The beach is not particularly inviting; however, the pool makes up for it.
