The Rusty Gate, Venus bay accommodation review: Weekend away

The location

Named after a merchant ship called the Venus, this small South Gippsland town sits among sand dunes on a narrow peninsula bound by Bass Strait and Anderson Inlet about a two-hour drive from Melbourne. It is one of those seaside towns that is quiet in winter and hums in the summer. In recent years, Venus Bay has been in the news, with some residents expressing concern about the over-harvesting of pipis on local beaches.

The place

This happy little shack can be found on Jupiter Boulevard, which backs onto the sand dunes of Cape Liptrap. Once a schoolhouse, its gabled roof, panelled timber walls and wooden floors still exude the familiar cosiness of an old school assembly hall. The house is filled with an eclectic mix of beachy things that hang from walls and sit prettily on long, recycled timber benches, adding to its laid-back, luxurious vibe.

The experience

Lacking the bustle of many of its bigger seaside neighbours, Venus Bay is a restful place. The Rusty Gate has two outdoor areas with deck chairs and a hammock that conjures up long, sun-splashed hours of decadent lolling, book in hand. Access to the path that leads down to the beach is gained through the rusty gate at the back of the property. If you fancy travelling further afield, Wilsons Promontory National Park, which is full of beaches and bushwalks, is an easy day trip.

Don't miss

Cooking up a storm using local produce. On the first Saturday of each month, there's a farmers' market in Koonwarra; on the second, there's one in Coal Creek (near Korumburra); on the third, find another in Foster; on the last, there's one in Inverloch. Tarwin Lower also hosts long weekend markets and Venus Bay is home to a local market over the summer months.
