Time traveller

Few destinations can compete with the Mediterranean when it comes to cultural density: crusader castles, battle sites, Greek ruins, the lure of Venice and the mystique of bold, seductive Istanbul, poised dramatically between Europe and Asia. APT is now offering new itineraries for 2015 on small luxury ship Tere Moana that promise visits to some of the region's most seductive and historic port towns. Among the delights is the 22-day Magical Seas of Europe journey between Rome and Istanbul in May, and the 15-day "Mediterranean Dreams"between Venice and Lisbon in August.

Taking flight

The Antarctic has become the ultimate must-do of cruising and, with limited passenger numbers, many cruises are booked long in advance. Peregrine Adventures has a brand-new Antarctic trip departing in February 2016, but consider it now if you want to book a berth – or get a hefty discount before November 5. It's an interesting cruise that links the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica with two legs by plane, cutting down on the long (and often tempestuous) days at sea that put some travellers off an Antarctic journey.

Burmese days

Myanmar is the river cruise of the moment, with numerous companies floating ships on the Irrawaddy. Abercrombie & Kent's new all-suite 48-passenger Sanctuary Ananda joins the flotilla in November. Its journeys will lastbetween three and 11 nights and, as well as plying the mainstream route between Mandalay and Bagan (and twice a year further south to Yangon), also explore the upper river reaches close to the Indian and Chinese borders. Rather inventively, cigar-making lessons will entertain on board, along with the more expected yoga, meditation and cooking classes. Cheroot, anyone?

Asian persuasion

Seabourn's new program offers 70 itineraries on the seven seas, but Asia is firmly in focus for the 2015-2016 season. Seabourn Sojourn starts with a 14-day round trip from Singapore to Malaysia and Myanmar, and continues with cruises visiting the Philippines, China, Japan and South Korea. One of the highlights might well be the 14-day Vietnam and Thailand voyage from Singapore to Hong Kong. It bags you unusual boasting rights: Christmas Day in Cambodia followed by New Year's Day in Halong Bay, a beaut spot to end the year.

Double vision

Blount Small Ship Adventures has a new 10-day journey along the coast of Maine in the USA and New Brunswick in Canada, with sailings in mid-2015. The small ship Grand Caribe meanders along eight different waterways on the Two Nation Vacation itinerary. Among highlights are the historic Canadian port of St John, classic lighthouses, and seafood in Digby, the self-claimed scallop capital of the world. Bar Harbour, a once-grand Victorian resort still sporting old-fashioned stores and meandering streets, is the jumping-off point for an optional excursion to rugged Acadia National Park.
