Polynesian pleasures

Paul Gauguin Cruises has released its cruises for 2017 on its luxury small ship Paul Gauguin, with voyages featuring French Polynesia, Fiji and other South Pacific itineraries. Among them is a 16-night Fiji to Bali voyage in April 2017 that visits Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and Indonesia, also done in reverse in June 2017. But the Paul Gauguin isn't overlooking its core cruises either, with various sailings of between seven and 14 nights in Tahiti, the Society and Tuamotu islands, the Marquesas, and the Cook Islands.

Tempting morsels

Silversea has three new 'Culinary Expedition' voyages coming up for the adventurous explorer with a keen appetite. The themed cruises on 132-guest Silver Explorer offer various culinary and wine events, both on board and on shore, in addition to regular cruise exploration. In both October 2016 and 2017, a 14-day culinary expedition heads along South America's west coast and will include fine dining in Lima and a visit to a Chilean winery. In May 2017, another culinary journey departs Lisbon and heads along Europe's Atlantic coast: just the chance to indulge in oysters, Bordeaux wines and tapas.

Celebrity Cruises has revealed its new cruises in the Galapagos Islands, providing more options with the addition of two new ships, Celebrity Xploration and Celebrity Xperience, which will join existing ship Celebrity Xpedition in March 2017. The three ships will then offer six different itineraries of between seven and 13 nights that together visit 15 islands and 30 ports of call in the archipelago renowned for its wildlife and Darwin connections. The longer cruise is unusual in including three nights on Santa Cruz Island, with visits to local communities.

Call of the wild

Newly-created Crystal Yacht Cruises is offering extensions to its 10 sailings on ultra-luxury yacht Crystal Esprit in the Seychelles in 2017 with four-day land safaris in Kenya. The extended land program offers travellers an in-depth experience of the culture and wildlife of Maasai Mara National Reserve, home to giraffes, lions, elephants, rhinos, cheetahs and other animals. There's also the option of a hot-air balloon ride and a visit to a village to learn about Maasai history, song and dance. A pre-cruise land program in Dubai is also available for the Seychelles voyages.

Flights of fancy

Quark Expeditions is rolling out its largest-ever fly-cruise programs in Antarctica for the 2017-18 season, including 11 'Fly the Drake' itineraries on two small ice-class vessels designed for time-strapped travellers (and perhaps those with queasy stomachs). The itineraries avoid the lengthy sailing of the notoriously rough Drake Passage from either Santiago or Buenos Aires, with passengers either flying one way or both ways, but enjoying the same Antarctica spectacles as regular cruises within just one week. Quark has also added premium ship Island Sky to its expedition fleet for those looking for a more comfortable and upmarket experience.
