THE TRIP The Greek Islands

ITINERARY This destination was a long-held dream for both of us, so when we arrived at the Theoxenia Hotel in Piraeus en route to Crete and were upgraded to the Presidential Suite, we were absolutely ecstatic. We had pre-paid and booked a week in Crete with Luxury Escapes to kick-start our holiday – such a good decision. On the advice of the Santorinidave website (santorinidave.com) we chose to travel with Blue Star ferries, which was well organised and comfortable. Our week at the Elounda Mare Hotel in a little bungalow was exactly what we both needed to re-energise for our two weeks island-hopping in the Cyclades. It was such fun. Small episodes sent us into paroxysms of laughter; we shared the same love of Greek food and culture but what stood out for us was the respect and generosity the Greek people showed towards us as a mother and daughter travelling together. The resilience of the Greek people in the face of a depressing economy was to be applauded. Their innate wisdom runs deep in their veins. At 78 years old I have travelled extensively, but never more than careful economy. This time we used all services available, including finding private drivers to guide us on each island. We shopped and tipped liberally to help the economy as we knew how much depended on every euro a person could earn. That was our excuse anyway!

BEST BITS Contact with the Greek people who showed us such generosity and respect and the adventure of not knowing where we might land up each day.

WORST BITS Having to take an extra room when I snored like a truck! However, telling a hotel receptionist of this problem always resulted in a helpful solution.

BEST TIPS Always greet hotel staff and receptionists with a happy, interested attitude. Smile and laugh readily. It makes such a difference. Don't be mean about tipping. They need it.

WHERE TO NEXT Back to the Greek Islands, of course, as soon as we have saved up enough to do it generously.
