We have four days in Cape Town in February/March, What's to do there? B. Pierce, Birchgrove

The Table Mountain Arial Cableway, which whisks you up to the heights of the mountain for a superlative view over the city, would be my No.1 choice.

Head up towards dusk and you get to watch the sunset, and avoid the crowds.

Do you prefer Chicago?s Benny the Bull or Boston?s Wally the Green Monster? The deviousness of Arizona State?s Sparky the Sun Devil or the goofiness of South Carolina?s Cocky? Or maybe you?re more traditional, and like Penn State?s Nittany Lion. If you?re offbeat, go for Stanford?s Tree. Those are among the choices people could have when the Mascot Hall of Fame announces its ballot of six candidates for the hall at a groundbreaking ceremony Friday in northwestern Indiana. The V&A Waterfront is another must-see, and another evening hot-spot.

Take a stroll along the walking trails of the Kirstenbosch National Botanic Gardens (sanbi.org), one of the world's great gardens.

Pick a cool time of day and tackle the walking trails of this 36-hectare green wonder.

Take a stroll around Bo-Kaap, once home to Indonesian slaves imported by the Dutch East India Company, now one of the city's coolzones, as is Woodstock, now planted with artists, designers and foodie haunts and home to the city's best lifestyle shopping.

South of the city, Kalk Bay is a neat little fishing village with lots of antique shops, restaurants and bookshops.

Finally, take a ride out to Robben Island, once used to detain political prisoners, the most famous of whom was Nelson Mandela, whose tiny cell is now virtually a national shrine.

The ferry leaves from the V&A Waterfront.
