AFTER A BUSINESS TRIP TO TORONTO IN JUNE WE WOULD LIKE TO SPEND A WEEK ON HOLIDAY. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON SIDE TRIPS IN FRENCH AREAS OF CANADA OR NEARBY US STATES? P. ATKINS, PANTON HILL

Niagara Falls is the standout but after that it gets tricky. If you want to see some more of Canada you could go for the cities, and you might fly to Quebec City then take a train back to Toronto with a stop in Montreal and possibly even Ottawa. On the other hand, if this is your first trip to this part of North America and you're not likely to repeat the journey, New York City is not too far away. It really depends whether you want the full-throttle excitement and attractions of NYC or the Canadian cities which are calmer and quieter.

You could also hire a car and drive north to Algonquin Provincial Park, and the park's maple-clad hills and pine-rimmed lakes and rivers will charm your socks off. The scenery comes straight off the calendar and the hiking, biking and canoeing on the park's lakes is five-star.
