I want to do longer tours involving treks and homestays in Vietnam. How do I book my accommodation when I don't know my dates and without paying a last-minute premium? K. Khaw, Kogarah, NSW

The internet comes to your rescue.

When you work out your dates just go online and find hotels using the online travel agents' websites such as Expedia (expedia.com.au), Booking.com (booking.com), Tripadvisor (tripadvisor.com.au) and perhaps Airbnb (airbnb.com.au).

Even making late bookings you should be able to find accommodation without paying a premium price.

If you're doing this from within Vietnam you're going to need an internet connection.

Plenty of shops sell prepaid MobiFone SIM cards, as well as several others, and from personal experience the MobiFone network offers good coverage.

TIPOLOGIST

If your hotel room isn't up to scratch, if the airline loses your bag, if a tour operator doesn't deliver, document their shortcomings. Take photos, get the facts in writing and take down names. If you need to seek compensation, records will ease the process.
