HAVING NEVER TRAVELLED OUTSIDE AUSTRALIA AND NOW IN MY 50S, ON A TIGHT BUDGET, HOW DOES ONE FINANCE AN OVERSEAS HOLIDAY? MY TIME IS RUNNING OUT! I'D LOVE TO REACH EVEN ONE EXCITING DESTINATION. J. HARPER, ARMIDALE

Package holidays deliver great value. Your costs are contained, accommodation and travel are paid for in advance and so, too, are meals in many cases. The only extras you might have to fork out for are meals that are not included, alcoholic beverages and shopping. The basic decision is what sort of holiday you want. If it's an adventurous holiday that takes you on a guided exploration of some special part of our planet, get hold of some brochures from operators such as Intrepid Travel, (intrepidtravel.com) and World Expeditions (worldexpeditions.com) and see what appeals. If it's total relaxation in a resort in Bali or Thailand you can find some great deals that include airfares as well as accommodation packages on the Traveller website (traveller.com.au). Cruising is another option, and big-ship cruising with all meals included can cost as little as $150 per day.

Travel agencies such as Flight Centre (flightcentre.com.au) are another place to look for budget-stretching package holidays.

Whichever holiday you choose, you need to include the cost of a passport and travel insurance.

Financing a holiday is a matter of putting something aside at regular intervals for most of us. That might mean giving something up, but even simple measures such as making your own coffee each day instead of buying it from a cafe and putting all your spare change in a tin can help build your savings.
