FOR MANY YEARS MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE DREAMED OF VISITING GOBEKLITEPE IN EASTERN TURKEY. IS IT SAFE ON A SELF-GUIDED TRIP WITH A PRIVATE DRIVER? B. BYRNES, TURA BEACH, NSW

In southern Anatolia, Gobeklitepe is probably the site of the world's first temple, dated to around 12,000 years ago. By all accounts this is a fascinating site, although remote. Since it is not too far from the Syrian border, and in an area where ISIS and the Kurdistan Workers' Party have carried out terrorist acts, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advises "Reconsider your need to travel". This DFAT advisory might have implications for your travel insurance policy. Eastern Turkey Tours easternturkeytour.org organises tours to Gobeklitepe from Sanliurfa.
