What are the best day trips from Lisbon, Portugal?

WE'D LIKE TO RENT AN APARTMENT IN LISBON NEAR THE MAIN RAILWAY STATION, CLOSE TO A MARKET. ANY ADVICE ABOUT SUITABLE DAY TRIPS BY TRAIN FROM LISBON? K. MCASEY, RICHMOND, VIC

The Baixa district – downtown – which is super close to the main Rossio Station is a good choice and very central. I'd go for Alfama, the city's oldest district, the narrow, spiralling streets that work their way down to the waterfront from the castle. Along the waterfront at the foot of this district is the Mercado da Ribeira which has lots of fresh produce, meats, cheeses, olives and all the other wonders you need for a Mediterranean food fest, also incorporating the dishy Time Out Market.

The standout train trip is the ride to Sintra, a gorgeous hilltop town which was once a favourite summer retreat for Portugal's royal court. As a consequence the town has a fabulous collection of palaces and castles, like a children's storybook come to life. You need two days. Mafra and Obidos are also great choices for day trips. Best way to get to both is bus from Lisbon's Campo Grande bus station, about a one-hour trip to either town. You can reach the bus station on the green metro line from Rossio Station.
