Travel trips: Where to stay around Sussex, England that's close to the sea with good pubs?

MY SPOUSE AND I ARE TRAVELLING TO WEST SUSSEX FOR A WEDDING IN MID-JULY. WE ENJOY HIKING, HEARTY FOOD AND LOCALLY BREWED BEER IN COSY PUBS. IS THERE A TOWN OR VILLAGE CLOSE TO THE SEA TO BASE OURSELVES IN AFTER ARRIVING FROM GATWICK AIRPORT? IS PUBLIC TRANSPORT FEASIBLE? B. COOKE, BATHURST

How about Arundel arundel.org.uk? Tucked into the southern rump of South Downs National Park, you've got lovely walks close at hand, easy access to the south coast between Brighton and Bognor Regis, a castle, pubs galore and a choice of self-catering, B&Bs or hotels. If you're looking for something smaller you might go for Amberley, a pretty little village that sits right among the South Downs, but with a far more restricted choice of accommodation and dining options. If the weather goes off there's a great train ride from Arundel to Pulborough and back, through countryside that is hard to access by car. You'll magnify your options many times over if you have a vehicle, accessing the walks by public transport is difficult. Travel time to Arundel from Gatwick Airport is 45 minutes by train and about the same if you drive according to Rome2rio (rome2rio.com).
