Travel tips: Things to do in South Island, New Zealand on a two-week holiday?

Milford Sound, New Zealand.

Milford Sound, New Zealand.

TRAVELLING TO SOUTH ISLAND, NEW ZEALAND, WITH MY HUSBAND FOR TWO WEEKS IN OCTOBER, LOOKING FOR WALKS, BEAUTIFUL SCENERY, ADVENTURE AND WINERIES. CAN YOU SUGGEST AN ITINERARY? J. HODGE, EAST BRISBANE QLD

Two weeks is generous so I'd suggest fly into Christchurch, spend a couple of days admiring the spring gardens then board the TranzAlpine train to cross the Southern Alps to Greymouth. Pick up a hire car at the station and drive south to spend two nights at either Fox Glacier or Franz Josef. Take a glacier hike, or better still a heli hike, then continue south. Lake Moeraki Wilderness Lodge (wildernesslodge.co.nz) is one of my favourite lodges in NZ, stay a couple of nights if it's within budget. Next stop is Queenstown, NZ's adventure headquarters. Along with the crazy adventures there are some classic walks from here such as the Routeburn and the Milford tracks, both multi-day wonders. One of my picks is the lower Routeburn. Drive along Lake Wakatipu to Glenorchy and make your way to the track end, cross the bridge and you're in a furry beech forest. The walk to Routeburn Falls Hut should take about 2½ hours, take a picnic lunch. The cruise in Milford Sound, or better still the overnight cruise in Doubtful Sound and the four-wheel-drive tour from Arrowtown to Macetown are not to be missed. The region around Queenstown has emerged as one of the country's most interesting winegrowing areas, the source of some notable pinot noir wines, take a tour. Plan to spend seven to 10 days here and you won't be bored for a minute, and fly home to Brisbane from Queenstown.
