PLANNING A TRIP TO CANADA IN FEBRUARY WITH OUR THREE-YEAR-OLD TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS, GO DOG SLEDDING, TAKE A HELICOPTER RIDE OVER THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS AND SNOWBOARD. LOVE SCENERY AND WILDLIFE, WHERE TO VISIT? M. CUMMINGS, BLACKWATER QLD

All these activities suggest Alberta (travelalberta.com), starting in Calgary and travelling through Banff to Lake Louise and Jasper and then taking the train to Vancouver. Discover Banff Tours (banfftours.com) can take care of the dog sledding and the heli ride. Snowboarding is no problem, with three world-class ski areas within easy reach of Banff (www.banff.ca).

Catching the northern lights is in the lap of the gods but there is a good chance they'll deliver. Scenery you'll get by the bucket, and while bears will be denned up at this time of the year, deer, bighorn sheep, elk and moose will still be around. Try the Bow Valley Parkway. You might time your visit to coincide with the Canmore Winter Festival in early February, there's lots to do including ice carving competitions, skating parties, street hockey, log sawing and dog events, a big hit with families.
