I AM LOOKING FOR A LUXURY CRUISE IN JULY/AUGUST AROUND ITALY. CAN YOU RECOMMEND SOMETHING FOR 10 NIGHTS OR FEWER? V. CARTER, ST KILDA

Among the small-ship, luxury cruise specialists you might consider are Ponant, au.ponant.com/, Silversea, silversea.com, Seabourn, seabourn.com, and SeaDream Yacht Club, seadream.com/. Ponant's Mediterranean Flavours or SeaDream's Nice to Civitavecchia, both in August, might be good options. Contact Sydney-based Cruise Express, cruiseexpress.com.au/, on 1300 766 537 for more information. While there are several options among the luxury cruise ships that do the rounds of Italian ports, I'm not sure this is a great way to see those cities. A luxury cruise aboard a small vessel might take you to Portofino, Civitavecchia, which is the port for Rome, Capri, Amalfi, around the sole of the Italian boot to one of the ports in Puglia and finally to Venice. However, a cruise schedule will not give you much time to experience anything more than a superficial view of any of these ports, and every one of them has a depth and breadth that demands close inspection, and time. If you want to experience the best that Italy has to offer, there is no option but to linger and that's not what a cruise is all about.
