Travel tips: What's there to do in Canada in December that isn't skiing?
TRAVELLING TO VANCOUVER FOR A FAMILY CHRISTMAS, LOOKING TO ADD TWO TO THREE WEEKS BEFORE OR AFTER. WE ARE NOT SKIERS AND HAVE SEEN MOST OF THE US WEST COAST FROM LA NORTH. G. MCINNES, CHELTENHAM, VIC
Tourism British Columbia suggests a bracing suite of winter activities for Vancouver, including eagle viewing, forest walking and hiking in Stanley Park, visiting the Granville Island Public Market, exploring neighbourhoods like Gastown, Yaletown and Kitsilano, the Hastings Park Winter Farmer's Market, taking in an ice hockey game and storm watching at Tofino on Vancouver Island.
You might also do what many Canadians do and head south for a couple of weeks. The hot spots are Central America and the Caribbean, with Cuba as a long-standing favourite. While you could do it yourself, a guided tour would be a better way to go if you've never travelled in that region.
Peregrine Adventures (peregrineadventures.com) has a good choice of tours in Mexico, Cuba, Costa Rica and Guatemala. Peregrine also has a new cruising division and they can put you on a small-ship cruise to see the best of Costa Rica or Cuba. Bunnik Tours (bunniktours.com.au) also has some great options for guided tours in Central and South America.
