Tripologist: From Venice Beach to the Getty, see LA in a day

By Michael Gebicki
Weird and wonderful ... Venice Beach.

Weird and wonderful ... Venice Beach.

We are returning from Europe in October via Los Angeles. We arrive on a Tuesday evening and depart for Sydney on Wednesday evening. We've never been to LA. Can you suggest activities?

- L. Hutton, Castle Hill

If in the mood for fresh air and entertainment, head for Venice Beach. It's packed with the weird, wonderful and desperate-to-be-noticed. Check out skateboarders, testosterone-enhanced handball players and the bodybuilders at Muscle Beach, where Arnie Schwarzenegger pumped iron before becoming the governator.

Then head for Rodeo Drive to press your nose against the windows of exclusive shop fronts. Jump in a taxi, travel west along Santa Monica Boulevard and you'll pass through Beverley Hills into West Hollywood, home to the lovely Kinara Spa (kinaraspa.com). Between two long flights, a spa might be a good idea. Now you're feeling fresher, you can't go past the Getty (getty.edu), which houses the collection of reclusive billionaire J. Paul Getty. How about a studio tour? Try Universal Studios (universalstudioshollywood.com) or Warner Brothers Studio Tour (www2.warnerbros.com/vipstudiotour).
