US Airways "deeply" regrets its Twitter "mistake".

US Airways apologised on Monday for sending out a Twitter message that included a pornographic image.

The airline acknowledged that the image came from its Twitter account but said it was sent by mistake. US Airways said the image was originally sent to the airline's account and US Airways tried to flag it as inappropriate.

"Unfortunately the image was inadvertently included in a response to a customer," the airline said in a statement. "We immediately realised the error and removed our tweet. We deeply regret the mistake and we are currently reviewing our processes to prevent such errors in the future."

Although US Airways removed the tweet, the image has been posted across the internet as a screen grab. The airline has 422,000 followers on Twitter.

We apologize for an inappropriate image recently shared as a link in one of our responses. We’ve removed the tweet and are investigating.

The tweet that included the image was directed at a Twitter user with the handle @ellerafter in response to her complaint about a delayed flight from Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina to Portland International Airport in Oregon.

US Airways' merger partner, American Airlines, was the focus of lot of attention on Twitter over the weekend when a Dutch teenager sent American Airlines a terrorist threat as a joke. Dutch police confirmed that they arrested her Monday.

The pornographic tweet from US Airways is only the latest Twitter embarrassment for corporate America.

In 2011, Chrysler Group apologised when a tweet that included foul language was sent out from one of its Twitter accounts.

"I find it ironic that Detroit is known as the motorcity and yet no one here knows how to ... drive," read the tweet, though the offensive word was uncensored.

Wow @USAirways. I've heard of getting screwed by an airline but this is ridiculous.

Last year, public relations executive Justine Sacco was reportedly fired after sending an offensive tweet about the AIDS epidemic in South Africa.

"Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding. I'm white!" she tweeted.

I've always said US Airways had the most leg room.

good luck retrieving that black box

Right now CNN is on the phone with @USAirways. "I heard you found a plane?"

Big thanks to @USAirways for finally giving us a satisfying ending to LOST.

But you have to admit that it's kinda hilarious that someone who does social media for an airline would be into Plane Porn™

And the plane, hopefully. RT @USAirways: We apologize for an inappropriate image shared in one of our responses. We’ve removed the tweet.

Cockpit. That is all. @USAirways
