Victoria's Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa opens Moroccan-style hammam

Its visitor numbers may have doubled in the past two years alone, and it was just announced Country Winner in the 2016 World Luxury Spa Award in the Luxury Mineral Springs Spa and Luxury Wellness Spa categories. But the good folk in charge of Victoria's historic Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa have not been resting on their laurels, working on a new $400,000 Moroccan-style hammam and open air "creekside" warm pool and plunge pool deck that opened at the end of June.

The hammam is designed to incorporate the rich Hepburn waters with the beautiful Moroccan bathing ritual, while the outdoor bathing deck connects bathers to the pretty bushland setting.

It's the first addition to the spa facility since its $13 million 2008 redevelopment and a carefully crafted one – having welcomed bathers in some of the most therapeutic mineral waters in the world since 1895, the Hepburn Bathhouse is a listed property and there is limited scope to expand.

The new features lie in the premium Sanctuary Retreat section of Hepburn, which, in addition to the main Bathhouse Spa Pool, also includes facial and massage treatment rooms and less crowded water treatment pools, and private bathing rooms.

As flagship of Victoria's Spa Country Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa's visitation has soared with the popularity of a region that includes excellent food and wine experiences, including the local Hepburn favourite, Italian bistro Rubens and high quality accommodation, among that, Hepburn Spa Retreat, the bathhouse's sister property on an adjacent block comprising 10 luxury villas.

But it's not only weekend stays and overnighters that have filled its pools. Because the area, which encompasses Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges, is only 90 minutes' easy drive northwest of Melbourne, it's also a day trip destination.

Much to the dismay of Belgravia Leisure, which runs the bathhouse, the popularity has meant some who venture up on busy weekends have recently found themselves unable to get in – the main bathhouse does not take bookings.

That's about to change with capacity to reserve a spot via the internet coming online within the next month.

Bathhouse access from $34 an adult. Sanctuary Retreat access from $74 plus treatments.

Villas from $295 a night of $197 a night for three nights. See hepburnbathhouse.com ; hepburnsparetreat.com.au
