A passenger on a flight with budget airline Scoot claims he was given a cup of ice when he asked for water and told to wait for it to melt.

Gene Goh said in a post on social media that he was on a delayed flight from Singapore to Osaka on November 16 when he "asked for just a plain cup of water but was told by [airline] staff that only bottled water was available for purchase.

"I was given a cup of ice and was told to wait for the ice to melt."

Goh said he would not have cared if the water was from the tap.

"I hope that there could be some sort of care for passengers, not being unreasonable over here."

Goh's post sparked a flood of comments, mostly critical of him.

"Scoot just save your life from drinking tap water," one Facebook user wrote.

"At least they were kind enough to give you ice for free," another said. "Besides, tap water in the plane is not drinkable. Imagine they gave it to you, you drank and suffered food poisoning like another episode of Spize."

"A thousand may fall at your side, then thousand at your right hand, but all it takes is a few dollars to buy a bottle of water," another said.

"Can afford flight ticket to Japan but can't afford water," another user wrote.

Some took Goh's side over the airline's, however.

"Drinking water is a basic necessity and when you need to drink, you need to drink," one commenter said. "Yes, it is a budget flight and you are expected to pay for food and drinks... but in the event of delay, the company should shoulder the responsibility of ensuring the minimal welfare of its passengers."

Scoot is owned by Singapore Airlines via its subsidiary Budget Aviation Holdings.
