Located 114 km south of Tennant Creek (390 km from Alice Springs and 1092 km south of Darwin), Wauchope lies to the west of the Murchison and Davenport Ranges. The town serves the travellers on the Stuart Highway. Historically it was established to service the mining communities in the area (wolfram was mined to the east of the town) as well as the Barkly Tablelands cattle industry.
