WE'RE SPENDING A WEEK IN MILAN IN MAY, WHAT DAY TRIPS CAN WE DO FROM THERE? R. LEADER, BAULKHAM HILLS NSW

Lake Como is the main attraction. Take the train from Milan to Como San Giovanni Station, walk the short distance to the ferries and buy a ticket to Bellagio. Bellagio is one of the prettiest towns on the lake's edge but it's well and truly on the tourist circuit. On the way, you'll pass a head-spinning array of classical villas, including one that belongs to George and Amal Clooney. If you're keen on gardens, get off at Tremezzina and visit Villa Carlotta, the azaleas should still be wonderful. My favourite garden in this area is Villa del Balbianello, for which the ferry stop is Lenno, then it's a 30-minute walk to the villa. Other worthwhile day trips from Milan include Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore, Bergamo, and, if you're looking for a wonderful city with zero tourists, fashion-conscious Varese.

TIPOLOGIST

The recent eruption of Bali's Mount Agung underlines the importance of buying travel insurance when you book your travels. Buy before and you're covered for any unavoidable change of plans, buy after the volcano starts rumbling and you're not.
