WHAT IF … I LOSE MY AUSTRALIAN PASSPORT AND AM ISSUED WITH AN EMERGENCY PASSPORT WHILE TRAVELLING OVERSEAS – CAN I KEEP TRAVELLING OR MUST I RETURN TO AUSTRALIA?

… according to Julie Bishop, Minister for Foreign Affairs:

"If you lose your passport, contact your nearest Australian diplomatic or consular mission, as strict eligibility conditions apply. If you are issued with an emergency passport, it is usually valid for seven months to give holders time to complete immediate travel plans. Some countries won't admit, and some airlines won't fly, visitors whose passports have less than six months remaining. If travellers can demonstrate firm travel plans extending beyond this timeframe, validity may be up to 12 months. In most cases, the holder of an emergency passport can continue travelling overseas. However, it's important to note that not all countries accept an emergency passport for entry, and some countries place additional requirements on the holder. For example, an emergency passport cannot be used for air or sea travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program – a visa for entry and transit is required."
