What happens if I lose my passport overseas?

If you lose your passport overseas, don't panic. You can get an emergency passport.

If you lose your passport overseas, don't panic. You can get an emergency passport.

Go to the Australian Passport Office website https://www.passports.gov.au [passports.gov.au] and report the loss as soon as you realise it's missing.

Login requires your passport number, which is why you need to keep this information stored and available online, or a photocopy. You will be issued with an emergency passport allowing you to return to Australia, and you will probably have to collect this from the nearest Australian diplomatic mission.

You also need to contact the immigration authorities in the country you are in. If you are unable to access the internet, call the 24-hour consular emergency helpline on +61 2 6261 3305.

If you are in a country with no Australian diplomatic mission it is possible to board an international flight to Australia without an emergency passport but your carrier will require authorisation from the Australian government. Contact your airline as soon as possible.
