Head for the baggage office, request a Property Irregularity Report and describe your luggage in as much detail as possible. You can also claim an immediate cash amount for toiletries. In 99 per cent of cases you'll be reunited with your bag but keep all documentation relating to your loss.

Strict time limits apply for reporting lost baggage. If after seven days your bag hasn't appeared, email the airline attaching a copy of the PIR. A claim for a lost bag must be submitted to the airline within 21 days of your flight. The claims form should be available from your airline's website.

Under the 1999 Montreal Convention, compensation for lost checked baggage is limited to 1000 Special Drawing Rights, worth about $1795 at the current value. Airlines have a long list of items that are excluded from compensation including antiques, computer equipment, electronics, jewellery and photographic equipment.
