After a conference in San Diego in March I am going with my 14-year-old daughter to LA for four days then a week in New York City. What activities will give us a good sense of these two cities – not too expensive and safe, interesting and fun? K. Fennessy, Frankston

In LA, the Universal Studios Tour works for all ages, and there are plenty of things to do that cost practically nothing. The Ocean Front Walk along Venice Beach is great for soaking up the LA vibe, hire some wheels from Boardwalk Skate & Surf if you're up for it. Another revealing walk is along Rodeo Drive, home to some of the ritziest shopping in the world, and you never know who you might see. The Getty Centre is truly fabulous, one of the world's great art collections, and admission is free.

In New York, take a stroll along Fifth Avenue and through Central Park and do the High Line walk. The Museum of Modern Art and the Frick are the essentials with the Guggenheim as a possible add-on. You might also take in a Broadway show. March is well short of the tourist season and you could find cheaper tickets. A personal favourite is the ride on the Staten Island ferry. It's an iconic trip past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, gateway for thousands of immigrants to 19th-century America. Avoid the commuter periods. There's no real reason to get off at Staten Island, and the ride is free. Williamsburg is where Brooklyn amps up its cool factor, a style enclave with lots of great cafes, a buzzy arts scene and funky shopping. Especially appealing on weekends when the Smorgasburg food market is happening on the waterfront at Prospect Park.
