MY FAMILY AND I ARE TRAVELLING AROUND EUROPE IN JULY WITH FOUR DAYS IN ICELAND AT THE END. WE PLAN TO SPEND A COUPLE OF DAYS IN REYKJAVIK, THEN A COUPLE MORE EXPLORING THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR WHERE TO GO WITHOUT HAVING TO DRIVE TOO FAR? OUR CHILDREN WILL BE NINE AND 14.

S. EBZERY, THIRROUL

The classic one-day tour out of Reykjavik is the Golden Circle, which takes in the Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall and the geological wonders of Thingvellir National Park, where the Eurasian and American tectonic plates are pulling apart. Another day could take you to the Blue Lagoon, a natural geothermal spa where you can take a dip in the warm, mineral-rich seawater. You can easily hire a car from Reykjavik and visit these areas, or take a tour for the Golden Circle at least, which would give you insights into the gushing, spurting and exploding wonders that Iceland offers. Iceland Horizon (icelandhorizon.is) and Goecco (goecco.com) are small-group tour operators that get great reviews.
