According to the Global Attractions Attendance Report, the world's most popular museum is the Louvre in Paris, which welcomed 10.2 million visitors in 2018.

That's an increase of more than 25 per cent over the previous year and an average of almost 28,000 visitors per day, or more than 40,000 during a busy day in peak season between June and September.

It certainly feels like that when you're elbowing your way to the front to try and get a glimpse of the Mona Lisa, the single work that draws more visitors than any other of the Louvre's collection of more than 38,000 artworks.

So much love can have an impact on the visitor experience.

On May 27, 2019 the Louvre closed its doors for the day and thousands of visitors were denied entry after security personnel went on strike, claiming visitor numbers were suffocating the museum.

The US and the UK each have three cultural institutions in the list of the 10 most popular museums and galleries in 2018.

Those in the UK are all in London, and admission to all is free.
