We want to go somewhere warm with our adult sons and their girlfriends from December 27 for three-four nights. Somewhere reasonably priced, domestic or overseas, but not Byron bay or Noosa. A. Luong, Mona Vale

That's a really busy time and finding something reasonably priced at that particular period is impossible, rates are high everywhere. Anywhere in northern Australia is in the grip of the wet season in late December. Kangaroo Island, just off the South Australian coast, is one possibility. The island has plenty of variety, it's a wildlife paradise, its castaway mentality makes it super relaxing and it's easy to get to.

Another option is Waiheke Island, just a short ferry ride from Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf. The island produces some great wines and there are lots of small food producers and an energetic and creative fine-food scene as well as walks, boating and cycling adventures.
