World's most Instagrammed attractions: New Zealand's Fiordland National Park beats Sydney Opera House

New Zealand's Fiordland National Park has been named one of the most Instagrammed locations in the world, beating sights such as the Sydney Opera House, South Africa's Kruger National Park and the UK's Stonehenge.

The South Island park, renowned for the glacier-carved fiords of Doubtful and Milford sounds, came in at number 39 on TravelBird's list of the most instagrammed tourist attractions globally, boasting of 570,000 tags, while the Sydney Opera House garnered over 540,000.

The online travel company ranked the 470 locations based on their number of hashtags on the photo-sharing social media platform, aiming to find out which are the most popular with millennial travellers.

Walt Disney World and South Beach in Florida took our third and fourth place respectively, followed by the Berlin Wall, the Las Vegas Strip, Big Ben, Times Square, Notre Dame and Oktoberfest

Philippa Murrell of Destination Fiordland said she was "delighted", but not exactly surprised, the park had been recognised.

"The outstanding natural scenery of the fiords including Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound and the magnificent mountain and lake vistas are a photographer's dream – different lights, moods and colours create the perfect images to share around the world and provide inspiration to potential travellers from all over the world."

The lakeside towns of Te Anau and Manapouri, located on the edge of the wilderness, are seeing an increase in visitors, she said, adding that they provide the perfect base for visitors to the region.

Andrew Fraser, marketing director for Tourism New Zealand, said Instagram is "an extremely important way to promote New Zealand to potential tourists around the world".

"There are now more than 600,000 followers of @purenewzealand on Instagram and 500,000 images have been shared to #NZMustDo."

"It's no surprise that Fiordland is on the list - it's one of the jewels in the crown of New Zealand tourism. It features stunning landscapes and a huge array of photogenic scenery capped off by the iconic Mitre Peak in Milford Sound."

TravelBird founder Symen Jansma, said the study affords an insight on how millennials are travelling in 2017.

More than half (55 per cent) of Instagram users are aged between 18 and 29, while 28 per cent are aged 30 to 49, according to a report by the PEW Research Centre on mobile messaging and social media. About 11 per cent of the app's user base is aged 50 to 64, while just four per cent are 65-plus.

When rating destinations, TravelBird looked at their number of hashtags in their local language and English as well as related tags.
