In 2016, West Hollywood's Sunset La Cienega development was to be home to the first west coast branch of the east's very cool The James brand of hotels. When they suddenly pulled out in 2017, a pop-up called The Jeremy claimed the space. But it was merely a placeholder for what was to come.

Finally, the high-profile Sunset Boulevard location has a permanent identity – and a cutting-edge one, at that, as a flagship property for 1 Hotels. Eco-hotels have been a thing for at least a decade, but 1 Hotels is a brand built around "inspiring conscious consumption". 1 Hotel's founder, the ultra-experienced hotelier and property developer Barry Sternlicht says this is the new luxury. "Now, more than ever, the idea of living well includes protecting the natural beauty around us," he says.

1 Hotels West Hollywood arrives in a time when perhaps the world's most car-dependent group of communities that the world usually refers to as "LA" – Los Angeles, Hollywood, West Hollywood, Santa Monica et al – is thinking more green, expanding public transport networks and developing walkability in neighbourhoods.

The hotel's eco-friendly ethos includes high energy efficiency, the use of recycled materials and plenty of plants.

Even on opening, the hotel already had an Energy Star score of 95 out of a possible 100, making it one of the most energy-efficient hotels in that wider area, with smart airconditioning and the use of reclaimed materials including carpet made of recycled fibres.

And plants. Plenty of plants. Innovative global hospitality designers AvroKo focused on greenery and raw materials to signal the property's ethos to a like-minded tribe, even crafting the reception desk from naturally fallen trees, likewise the large, striking numeral one in the garden at street level.
