Airbus has started its celebrations of its 50th anniversary with an epic formation flight over its home base in Toulouse, France.

The plane manufacturer showed off its fleet to mark a half-century in business.

The company's commercial aircraft family was joined in formation with the Patrouille de France aerobatic demonstration team.

On display was an A220, A319neo, A330-900, A350-1000, A380 and the BelugaXL.

Airbus was founded on May 29, 1969 after a meeting by French and West German ministers. The idea was to revive the struggling aircraft industry after WWII.

Last month new Chief Executive Guillaume Faury paid tribute to the company saying: "It's fair to say that many people doubted our chances of success but here we still are 50 years and 12,000 commercial aircraft later," he said.
