Bindo Creek Cabins, Oberon accommodation review: Weekend away

The location

Perched 1100 metres above sea level in the Oberon Shire, these four attractive cabins sit in the middle of 40 hectares of classic Blue Mountains bush and farmland. The property is a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Sydney, 10 minutes from Oberon and 30 minutes from the splendour of the Jenolan Caves.

The place

Choose from four two-bedroom, self-contained wooden cabins. We opted for "Wollemi", partly for its spa bath but also its easy access to the pizza oven. In estate-agent speak, the cabins are cosy, but that's just fine, especially in winter, since they heat up quickly once you have the wood-burning combustion fireplace crackling. The décor has a rustic-comfort quality, the beds are invitingly warmed with electric blankets, and there are great views of the undulating landscape - particularly from the spacious deck overlooking the valley and the river below.

The experience

Even though you're unlikely to meet the owner herself, you still feel a guiding presence courtesy of the multitude of hopping native fauna that carefully watch your drive into the property from the cattle grid. You'll want to explore the property and its glorious scenery. Take a walk down the steep track to the trout-filled stream for a spot of fishing (you can borrow a rod from the communal barbecue area), making sure to keep an eye out for platypus, wallabies and 'roos. Afterwards, sit by the fire and play one of several provided board games or watch a DVD.

Don't miss

There is a multitude of outdoor activities on offer, with nearby horse-riding and an 18-hole golf course overlooking Lake Oberon, but if you only do one thing outside your cabin's comfort zone, make it a visit to Jenolan Caves. The drive into its valley is spectacular enough, but it's nothing compared to the beauty of a tour through the caves' World Heritage-listed limestone interiors.
