Eidsvold
Service centre for the surrounding beef cattle grazing
region.
Located 425 km north-west of Brisbane, 230 km west of Maryborough
and 192 metres above sea-level, Eidsvold calls itself the 'Beef
Capital of the Burnett'. This small and attractive settlement is
nestled in a valley of gently undulating grazing country and is now
nothing more than a service centre for the surrounding
pastoralists. It is hard to imagine that it was ever a thriving
goldmining town.
Lady Elliot Island
Fascinating and affordable coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef.
Located 85 km north-east of Bundaberg, Lady Elliot is a small (40 hectares - it can be walked around in about 45 minutes) coral cay at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. In fact it is the southern most inhabited island on the reef and the only coral cay to have a proper airport.
Bundaberg (including Lady Elliot Island and Lady Musgrave Island National Park)
One of Queensland's large and prosperous coastal cities
Bouldercombe
A tiny rural retreat which is now little more than a collection
of houses and a pub.
Located 662 km north of Brisbane and 21 km west of Rockhampton,
Bouldercombe is a tiny rural retreat which is now little more than
a loose collection of houses and a pub. It essentially functions as
a commuter settlement for Rockhampton - a kind of rural equivalent
of the settlements on the coast at Yeppoon and Emu Park. The only
hint of its past glory as an important goldrush township is the
existence of a Goldfields rural residential subdivision.
Bargara (and Mon Repos Environmental Park)
Attractive seaside holiday resort east of Bundaberg.
Some 13 km east of Bundaberg and 384 km north of Brisbane is the pleasant seaside holiday resort of Bargara. This is a town geared to the tourist trade. The road which runs along the coast - The Esplanade, Miller Street and Woongarra Scenic Drive - is now a near-continuous strip of holiday homes, flats, apartments and motels all built between the beach and the hinterland.
Yeppoon
Attractive holiday resort town east of Rockhampton.
Located 681 km north of Brisbane and 40 km east of Rockhampton, Yeppoon is a holiday resort which has grown in popularity due to the extraordinarily successful advertising campaign associated with Great Keppel Island and the growing awareness that Yeppoon is surrounded by attractive beaches where, for most of the year, the swimming is good and the living is easy. It is basically a series of flat, firm sand, well developed beaches with access via good roads.
