In this day and age it'd probably be a security risk but for Ben Chifley and John Curtin, two political titans of Australia's representative democracy and constitutional monarchy, a regular unencumbered Canberra stroll together became a constitutional for the ages.

Now the Prime Ministerial duo's regular 750 metre-long wartime stroll, between the Hotel Kurrajong and what is today Old Parliament House, has been immortalised in the form of a guided tour.

The ritual walk took place during World War II between the two historic sites, opened in 1926 and 1927, with Old Parliament House now the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD).

The incumbencies of the two Labor prime ministers John Curtin (1941-45) and Ben Chifley (1945-49), spanned momentous war and post-war eras in the nation's history, with Chifley serving as federal treasurer during Curtin's prime ministership.

While Curtin figures in the tour, it's officially dubbed "Chifley's Walk". Chifley, a former, perennially pipe-puffing train driver, eschewed The Lodge, preferring to stay at the Kurrajong for more than a decade. He did so right up to his death in 1951, when he was opposition leader, following a massive coronary in his hotel room.

The tour incorporates Peter Corlett's engaging 2011 statue of the pair on the route, with the sculpture based on a 1945 black and white photo by Don Stephens. Once at MoAD, guests are escorted on an exclusive guided tour, complete with anecdotes and stories about Chifley.

Guests have long been able to book a special package to stay in Chifley's room with the hotel full of Chifley memorabilia.

"We already have historical photographs of Ben Chifley displayed throughout the hotel," says Faisal Sayed, Hotel Kurrajong's general manager. "Our restaurant is named after him and, excitingly, we have a replica of the brown leather chair that Chifley sat in at the hotel to enjoy his nightly whisky and cigar."

The "Chifley's Walk" tour runs seven days and is available exclusively to Hotel Kurrajong guests. The walk section to the MoAD is self-guided. See hotelkurrajong.com.au; moadoph.gov.au
