Crikey, it's an Aussie gayvasion

Hundreds of Aussie gay men and women are popping over the ditch to enjoy the snow and Queenstown night life.

Gay Ski Week organiser Mark Sansford said about 300 members of the Australian community, as well as a few from New Zealand, had already arrived yesterday.

"But I think we'll have about 600 through by the end of the week," he said.

Festivities kicked off with bowling last night.

There will be a Fawlty Towers spectacular tomorrow, drag karaoke on Thursday and a White Out party on Saturday.

Mr Sansford, who has run Gay Ski Week since 2003, said numbers were up on previous years, with the gay community seemingly impervious to the economic downturn.

"It's the two incomes and no kids," he said.

With street names like Man and Camp, Queenstown was a gay man's perfect playground, he said.

An increasing number of visitors were not so keen on the "ski" element of the week but the schedule had been shuffled to fit in other adventure activities such as bungy jumping, he said.

"Their partner or friend might hit the slopes but there's plenty else they can do around town. It's not just about skiing."
