Croc not welcome at Broome beach

Wildlife officers in the West Australian town were today preparing to shoot the reptile, which has spent days hanging around the beach popular with locals and international tourists.

None of the officers want to kill the croc but if it was spotted near the beach today it would be shot, said Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) district manager Alan Byrne.

"Given there is a long weekend coming up we really need to take some action, that is why we are here today," Mr Byrne said.

Saltwater crocodiles are occasionally spotted at the beach but they don't usually linger, he said.

The decision to shoot the reptile was made after three days of monitoring its movements.

Three boats and a helicopter were searching for the crocodile.
