If there’s one thing Singaporeans would express their undying love for, it would be food. You can tell from the long queues at hawker centres and restaurants dotted across the island, and the food celebrations held throughout the year. Lovers of gourmet market, great wines and unique dining will get their dose of satisfaction at Savour (March/April) which promises award winning cuisines from around the world and activities like celebrity chef masterclasses and cooking studios. Come July, the Singapore Food Festival not only celebrates our love of local food but is also where local chefs take centre-stage. This annual event showcases a variety of interesting and immersive experiences of Singapore’s melting pot of cultures and its evolution.
There’s no better time to visit Singapore than during cultural festivals, where you can experience and immerse in Singapore’s various unique cultures first-hand. The biggest and most anticipated event of the Chinese community, Chinese New Year, sees Chinatown bursting with activities, stunning street light ups and events like Chingay Parade – a grand carnival-like street parade featuring dazzling floats and thrilling pyrotechnic displays. In one of the strongest show of faith, Hindu devotees seek blessings and offer thanks during Thaipusam. Devotees walk miles while carrying milk pots and wooden kavadis – two semicircular pieces of wood or steel attached to a cross structure that can be balanced on their shoulders – to fulfil their vows. In preparation of carrying a kavadi, a devotee has to first prepare himself spiritually through a life of abstinence and strict vegetarian diet for about a month prior to the festival.
