Edition Hotel, New York City: Latest Edition sets tongues wagging

By Lance Richardson
Chic to chic: inside the Edition New York.

Chic to chic: inside the Edition New York.

Any property that passes through the hands of Ian Schrager, the nightclub impresario turned master hotelier, is bound to get people chattering.

For the last few years, Schrager has collaborated with Marriott to produce a collection of hotels called "Edition" that are the hospitality equivalent of an Apple product line – elegant, deceptively simple, and characterised by a trademark Le Labo scent pumped through the air conditioning.

Schrager's latest offering, the New York Edition, opened on May 12, joining Editions in Miami, Budapest, and London. The hotel's Manhattan location, in the converted Metropolitan Life Tower on Madison Square Park, makes it both geographically convenient and instantly unforgettable. Think of St Mark's Basilica in Venice, but American, so supersized, adorned by four clock faces with minute hands that weigh a half-ton each. Views are spectacular, befitting a building that was tallest in the world until 1913.

Inside, the Rockwell Group and I.S.C. Design Studio, under the guidance of Schrager, have produced a 273-room hotel that mixes minimalist design with flourishes from a Gilded Age mansion. This means lots of White Oak panelling, poured concrete, and gold-leaf picture frames; a collection of black-and-white photography curated by Trunk Archive; and a well-dressed staff that seem to have stepped off the pages of Vogue.

A second-floor restaurant, Clocktower, is directed by the Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton, and arranged as a series of intimate dining rooms, complete with a billiards table and loopy chandeliers by Eric Schmitt. Clocktower, like the hotel itself, is a place to be seen, so wear something sharp.

Room rates start at US$675 $866) a night. See editionhotels.com/new-york.
