Four-wheel driving in Zimbabwe was a fabulous adventure for Geraldine Turner.
WHICH WAS YOUR BEST HOLIDAY?
Zimbabwe in 1992. It was just us, a four-wheel-drive and a guide. One day we tracked a rhino on foot, saw animals en masse including elephants, impala, zebras and warthogs. We camped in a tent with a bathroom and all the bells and whistles. I just loved Africa's big, wide open skies.
AND THE BEST HOTEL YOU'VE STAYED IN?
The Bauer Hotel in Venice. It's in St Mark's on the Grand Canal, near all the coffee shops. The rooms are decorated with Venetian semi-rococo gilded furniture and plush marble bathrooms overlooking the canal. The service was wonderful - I mean they were rude, like some Italian hotels are where they fling the coffee and bread rolls on the table at you, but I love that.
WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS TAKE WITH YOU?
Lipstick, good sunglasses and good walking shoes. If it's a really early start to the day, you can put dark glasses on and forget eye make-up, but you have to have lips.
WHAT'S YOUR BEST PIECE OF TRAVEL ADVICE?
Pack an empty screw-up bag for the things you buy along the way.
AND YOUR WORST EXPERIENCE ON HOLIDAY?
When my husband and I were in New York in 2008, we were due to check out of our hotel and spend our last day shopping and walking around. But I woke up with a migraine, and when I get one I throw up every 20 minutes. We had to stay in the hotel because I couldn't stop being sick.
WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO NEXT?
South America. I'd love to do Rio, Buenos Aires and Machu Picchu, and Cuba too.
