A beach holiday is a total cliché, probably the most unimaginative way there is to have a relaxing holiday. Palm trees? Golden sands? Turquoise waters? Everyone knows about this stuff!

But sometimes the clichés are good. Sometimes they're clichés for a reason. And a holiday by the beach on a tropical island might just might be a very good thing indeed: the sound of crashing waves while you sleep at night; the healthy feeling of salt on your skin; the realisation that there's nothing else here to do – literally, nothing else to do.

Of course, not all beaches and tropical islands are created the same. Some are far better than others. Some elevate this cliché to the most enjoyable level possible. And today we're going to find out what they are.

On this episode of Flight of Fancy, the Traveller.com.au podcast, I chat to sun-kissed beach lovers Georgia Rickard and Rob McFarland about sun and sand, about taking your holidays in the stereotypical versions of paradise. Where are the world's best beaches and islands? What do you do in these sunny climes? And how to you ensure everyone has a good time?
