I don't have a crystal ball, and I don't know the exact details of the travelling future – but I can tell you this. You're probably not going on an overseas holiday this year. Maybe New Zealand will allow quarantine-free access for Australians soon. Maybe a few other countries will ease open their doors, too. But the chances are still high that for most of us, a visit to a foreign country will remain off the agenda for 2021.

So where does that leave us? It leaves us here, of course, in Australia. It also leaves us desperate for the thrill of overseas travel, so keen to capture the spirit of foreign exploration even while we remain on our own shores.

And there's good news on that front. Because you can recreate the overseas travel experience right here at home. You can harness that feeling of freedom, of wonder, of bafflement and of joy while you're in Australia. The trick is to know what to look for.

On this episode of Flight of Fancy host Ben Groundwater is joined by fellow travel writers Sue Williams and Rob McFarland to take the thrill of overseas travel and apply it to the Australian experience. What can you do here on our own shores to recreate the thrill of exploring another country? How do you take the things you love about being in a foreign place and experience them here instead?
