Flight of Fancy podcast: Van life - the travel trend taking over Australia
By Ben Groundwater
Who would have thought that van life would become cool? Who knew that the daggy holidays of our childhoods would suddenly be dominating our social media feeds in the 2020s, that caravans and campervans would become the travel accessory of the COVID age?
#vanlife: it's here, and it's wildly popular. Check your Instagram feed, it's probably filled right now with smiling Millennials living their best lives in Kombis and campervans lined with blonde-wood panelling and unique storage solutions. Check out any servo on any given highway in Australia right now and you will discover endless queues of grey nomads lugging their lives on wheels to the next fantastic destination.
Caravan sales are up this year by almost 250 per cent. You can barely get your hands on an old campervan for any amount of money. So what's going on here? And how do you get involved in the trend?
On this episode of Flight of Fancy host Ben Groundwater is joined by dedicated campervan and caravan advocates Kerry van der Jagt and Jarryd Salem to talk "van life", travel in everything from classic caravans to the latest tricked-out campers. Why is this form of travel so popular right now? What does it take to get into van life? What do you do? Where do you go? And how do you prevent arguments while you're getting there?
