Found a job, now some cover

By Michael Gebicki

My 20-year-old daughter is going to Whistler, Canada, for a working holiday at the end of the month for the duration of her year-end break from university. What would be her best health insurance option?

- A. Azzopardi, Lindfield.

Insurance for working holidays falls into a special category. Travel insurance is intended to cover leisure travellers and it might not apply if your daughter has cause to claim for any work-related matter.

Working Holiday Travel Insurance (workingholidaytravelinsurance.com) is aimed specifically at travellers who also intend to work and the website has contacts for insurers who offer such cover. You should also find out whether her employer's insurance provides cover while she is at work and to what extent.

Since she is also travelling, look at the Choice website (choice.com.au) and find the travel insurance buying guide, which has plenty of useful information. The website also includes a list of underwriters that offer travel insurance, with links for an instant quote.

Because your daughter is under 21 years of age and presumably away for a couple of months, the price for some premiums is truly alarming.

Compare Travel Insurance (comparetravelinsurance.com.au) might help you track down a better deal but make sure it provides adequate cover for her specific needs.
